June Meeting

Date and Time: Sunday, June 7, 2009 at 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM Local Time (9:00 PM - 11:00 PM UTC)

Location: Alcor - 7895 E Acoma Drive, Unit # 107, Scottsdale, AZ 85260, USA | Google Maps

Description (from Ian Conrad): The topic will be, in brief, a discussion around the question:

  • How is the mainstream interest in transhuman (h+, if you prefer) ideas affected by the rehashing of common sci-fi tropes such as "Skynet"?
The recent Terminator movie seems to have sparked a flurry of interest in transhuman (and more specifically, singularitarian) ideas and topics in the mainstream -- for both good and ill. By way of what I mean, please see the attached links:
  • New York Times article, "The Future of Artificial Intelligence"
  • Recent website seeking to capitalize on the Terminator:Salvation movie to push the agenda of Friendly AI.
  • A debate between the director of communications for the SIAI, Michael Anissimov, and the author of "The End of Science", John Horgan
[...] please do also come to the meeting armed with your opinions and perspectives.
